Training
One of the important tasks you are asked to do as you join and continue to be a part of Scouting is to be a trained leader.
Trained leaders understand Scouting America’s mission, vision, purpose, methods and values. Trained leaders deliver the promise of Scouting to our youth — the promise of adventure, leadership and growth.
Every Scout deserves a trained leader.
Safeguarding Youth Training is required
Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) is required for all registered volunteers and is a joining requirement. It is the first training every leader takes, and it is part of the council’s commitment to keeping youth safe.
You do not have to be a registered member to take Safeguarding Youth Training.
Four steps to becoming a trained leader
1. Set up a My.Scouting account
Create an account at My.Scouting to access online training.
2. Complete Safeguarding Youth Training
The first training all leaders must take.
3. Complete Hazardous Weather Training
Required for all adults who work directly with youth, and must be taken every two years.
4. Position-Specific Training
Scouting America’s Learning Center offers training for every adult leader position. Select your position and a learning plan is built for you.
In-person courses
The council runs in-person position-specific training sessions through the year, alongside BALOO, IOLS, Wood Badge and National Youth Leadership Training. Upcoming dates appear on the council calendar.
